I grew up in the diverse neighborhoods of Flatbush, Brooklyn, where I had the good fortune to meet people from different backgrounds and walks of life. I have been involved in this community for years as a personal care assistant, a community organizer, a caregiver to children, and well-know merchant of arts from Africa and the diaspora.
Over the course of the years I have seen negative changes affect Flatbush—changes that impact our youth and their everyday choices. The problems and challenges that affect our community include gangs, gun and domestic violence, homelessness, and drugs. We often acknowledge these problems without offering solutions. I seek to change this through the promotion of arts that represent the rich legacies we carry as people of African descent.
I continue to work with and support a dynamic group of artists in Brooklyn who are passionate about all this and more. Your purchase of a Makini Sacred Arts piece will go to developing spaces for arts presentations that are fun, engaging, educational, and most of all free to youth participants. Such presentations include dance, drumming, and traditional Haitian folk songs with Kriyol Dance! Collective.
100% of proceeds from Makini Sacred Arts sales will help to sponsor a young person's participation in these activities; and toward paying the artist instructors.
